Xiaomi CEO Mr. Lei Jun has officially announced on his Weibo account that sales of the company’s budget smartphones Redmi 2 and 2A have together exceeded 13 million units worldwide. The Redmi 2 was launched only earlier this year in January, which means it took the device only around five months to reach the milestone, making it one of the quickest to have done so. The Redmi 2 / 2A variants taken together, is also the sixth phone from the Xiaomi stable to have reached the milestone of 10 million devices sold. Earlier, the five other Xiaomi smartphones to have attained the landmark were the Mi2, Mi3, Mi4, Redmi 1 and Redmi Note.

The Redmi 2A saw a price-cut just earlier this week, whereby Xiaomi reduced the price of the company’s most affordable smartphone to 499 Yuan ($80) from 599 Yuan ($100). Within hours of the announcement, sales of the device reportedly spiked to over 200,000. By the end of the day, the Redmi 2A had reportedly sold over 300,000 units in a single day, which just gives people an idea about the scope and scale of the market in China.

Xiaomi has been on a roll of late, having overtaken Samsung last year to take the mantle of the largest smartphone vendor in the country. The company’s only competition nowadays seem to come from the rejuvenated Apple Inc, who has seen its sales rise exponentially over the last year, ever since the company came out with the large screen iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. the two companies are currently locked in a tussle over the number 1 slot in the country.

While Xiaomi has already diversified into smart wearables with the Mi Band and has just released smart air conditioners in partnership with Midea, smartphones expectedly remain bread and butter for the company. It will be hoping that the momentum it has gathered from a strong start in overseas markets will continue, amidst rising competition and diminishing pricing power at home.
