Connection and bracelet search

1. Can I sync bracelet with PC?
Yes you can. To do that you need VirtualBox, Android 4.4 x86 image and Bluetooth 4.0 adapter that will work.

2. Can I use Mi Band while using BT handsfree/headset/smartwatch?
Yes. BT 4.0 is multithreaded protocol so it can work with few devices at same time. However there was cases when handsfree loses connection upon connecting Mi Band. It depends on your handsfree device.

3. Can I use 2 Mi Bands on same phone?
No you can't. Bracelet works only with 1 Mi Account. You need pair second bracelet with different Mi Account.

4. I can't connect Mi Band. What should I do?
- Try to sync while doing "watch" gesture to view bracelet training progress.
- Try to sync while charging bracelet.
- Try to install oldest possible Mi Band app.
- Try to move away from any possible BT device that can be in range.

Application and Registration

1. What should I do if can't register account inside the app?
You can create account by visiting -> https://account.xiaomi.com/pass/register
If you can't receive SMS, use email registration.
Xiaomi forum users already have Mi account.

2. Can I sync Mi Band statistic with Google Fit/S Health/MyFitnessPal etc?
No. Mi Band only works with Mi Fit (Mi Band) application.

3. Are there any records, goals in app?
Yes, you can set your goal for daily activity and beat it by doing new records. Also you can share them.

4. Why there is hand selection in Mi Band settings?
This option created for correctly working "Watch" gesture to look for your progress.

5. How to see my progress on bracelet?
Make gesture like you are watching time on your watch. Do it intensively and precisely so it could correctly recognize gesture.

6. I have "Neck" in hands menu selection. What's it for?
From what I see, there will be band straps for neck, to use it as necklace.

7. Application wakes up phone too much. What should I do?
To reduce waking attempts - install tweaked version without notifications, it have disabled Xiaomi Push service that usually wakes up phone.

8. Are there firmwares for bracelet?
Bracelet firmware updates within application updates. It's included in application and if there is new firmware, app will update it.
Make sure that bracelet charged by more than 5% and it's close to phone.

9. How to make my ID show nickname instead of numbers?
Log in to you Xiaomi account through website, click on Personal -> Change and fill in Name field.

10. Will my data lost if I'll delete application?
No. User data saves on Xiaomi servers, just before uninstalling app make sure to sync data.

11. Incorrect system time. How to fix?
Go to your phone time settings and change Time Zone to same one you have but with different city.
Example: GMT +2:00 Cairo to GMT +2:00 Helsinki, or GMT -6:00 Central America to GMT -6:00 Central Time. This is only if your Automatic time zone fail.

12. What does BLE Broadcast mean?
This is option for future Xiaomi Mi Scale product, which is basically a smart weight scale and in order to let it connect to your bracelet/app you need allow BLE connection.

13. Why Mi Fit app requires phone calling permission?
Don't worry. This is for HealthLink service, which mainly created for China. If you click to call, it will still ask for your permission.

Notifications and Social Networks

1. Can bracelet vibrate on receiving SMS / msg from social networks?
Yes, but for this you need install Tweaked Notify application.

2. What's the duration incoming call vibration? What should I do if vibration happen to late?
Bracelet vibrates 10 times when you receive incoming call. It will stop vibrate once you pick up call.
If you get vibration too late, go to Mi Band settings and click on Incoming Call menu, then choose 3 seconds delay. This is lowest value.

3. So what about Social Networks? How to make magic happen?
You can get vibration from everywhere you want i.e Facebook, Twitter, Google+, SMS. Just install tweaked notify version and follow notification guide from tweaked app topic.

4. Can I view other users statistic?
Yes, but you need install WeChat, which is Chinese social app.

Sleep tracking and Alarm

1. How bracelet tracks sleep?
Mi Band tracks your sleeping activity which depends on your body moving to determine the sleeping phase. Application contain sleep statistics, light/deep sleep and wake time.

2. Can alarm work without phone?
Yes. You just need synchronize alarm settings like regular data sync. Bracelet have it's own physical memory to contain all needed settings.

3. In which phase alarm will wake me up?
Bracelet will wake you up in light sleep phase, which is N2 phase (Non-REM sleep). In other words, Mi Band will try to wake you up after deep sleep phase when you prepared to go into light sleep phase to make you feel fresh after waking up.

4. How exactly bracelet wakes you up?
If you set regular alarm: Alarm will work at set time. Vibration duration: 5 times.
If you set smart alarm: Alarm will work in some period of 30 minutes, it depends on sleeping phase. Vibration duration: 5 times each 10 minutes, repeats 6 times.
To cancel vibration just tap few times on bracelet.

5. Can I change duration/intense of alarm vibration?
No.

6. Can Mi Band track daily nap?
It can, but statistic supports only main night sleep. Alarm should work properly.

7. Can I look for previous sleep statistic?
You can only observe detailed statistic of current sleep. Application can only show you mediocre information about your previous sleep activity in text mode.

8. Can it track my sleep in plane/train/car?
No. Transport vibration will interfere collecting your body movement data.

Steps, running, exercises

1. How bracelet counts my steps?
Mi Band include three-axis accelerometer ADXL362, that basically reads all your movements. Depending on your height, approximate step length multiplies by step counts.
Result is pretty much accurate no matter if your hand is in pocket or not.

2. Bracelet does wrong step count!
Bracelet can add extra steps to your result depending whether you swing your hand or not. But this helps to calculate calories, which is important for daily statistics and your activity performance.
None of existing pedometers will show you 100% accurate result.

3. Can bracelet track bicycle movement?
At this moment - no. Fitness Center may get this feature soon.

4. Is there any inactivity notification?
No. But you can install/use extra alarms with Notify application and set vibration times.

5. Does it count steps while you driving?
Depends on road quality. Fitness Center may have driving feature soon.

6. Can bracelet count sit-ups/jumping rope exercises?
Yes. Fitness Center have Sit-up and Jumping rope exercises. Use Fitness Center in Mi Fit (Mi Band) application to track your training.

7. How Running Helper works?
Currently Running Helper works only in China due to limited maps support. So unless you are living in China I wouldn't even bother messing with Running Helper for now.

Useful tips

1. Charge your Mi Band from PC. Avoid using AC chargers.
2. While you are doing elliptical trainer, take off bracelet tracker and put it in your pocket or on your belt.
3. Bracelet designed for 24/7 body monitoring so do not take it off, unless you are doing shower/bath.
4. Do not discharge bracelet to 0%. Try to charge it when it goes to 5%.
5. If your bracelet "died" and can't sync/charge, try to put your bracelet tracker to refrigerator and keep it there for few days (But not in fridge, don't put it in negative zero place). Then try to charge it after warming it up.

1. What Mi Band can offer?
Bracelet can track your moves, walked distance and burned calories, sleep quality and have built-in smart alarm. Smart alarm can wake you up in light sleep phase (Non-REM/N2 phase).
It can also vibrate when you receive incoming call (By default it's 20 seconds, you should pick 3 seconds as lowest value), as well as unlocking your phone without password.
There is tweaked application that can vibrate when you receive SMS or social network message, you can see download link upper.
2. Which devices support Mi Band?
Mi Band can be used with any phone/tablet running Android 4.3+ and Bluetooth 4.0.

3. How long bracelet can work from full charge?
Bracelet can hold its charge for 30-60 days! All depends on how you use it and which application you use. For example, notification version app can drain your battery faster.
With 1 alarm/day, mediocre calling vibration it can last for 30 days. Some cases were issued when users had faulty battery that lasts 2 days. If you occurred this issue - ask your seller to replace device.
4. Does it have any water protection?
Yes, Mi Band have IP67 secure that should protect from dust and water. You can use it while taking shower/bath, but I strongly recommend not to use it in water. Some users had water inside capsule after taking shower and batch. So just take off Mi Band while you take shower, keep your body clean!
5. Are there any other bracelet straps for Mi Band?
At this moment, there are different color rubber straps on sale, similar to one you have by default. There are 2 types of straps selling, official and fake, so take care choosing it.
Official one have "Designed by Xiaomi" text on strap and metal button. Xiaomi showed leather straps when presented Mi Band, but no one knows release date.
6. Can Mi Band work without syncing for some time?
Yes, since bracelet have built-in memory it can work some time, approx 10 days. By this time bracelet will gather all statistics and then send it to phone, where it gonna be upload to Xiaomi servers.
I would recommend you to sync bracelet with Mi Fit app at least once a day.
7. Does it have heartbeat monitor/NFC/GPS?
Nope.
8. Can it work at cold winter times?
Yes. You will wear bracelet under cloth, so it will be in a warm place.

Xiaomi MI Band : Review

Inside this is the minimalistic box of the Mi Band. Nothing on the front of the box except the MI logo.

When you open the box, you are greeted by the small Mi Band right in the centre, its a cute looking band is what the feedback that I got from my wife and daughter. Which means, I have to agree too that the band is cute.

Box contains the Mi receiver (the one in the silver), Mi Silicone bracelet, charging cable and the user manual.

User manual is of not much use as its in chinese and I don't understand that. There is not even single instruction in English in the manual.

The main unit of the MI band has to be removed from the Mi silicone bracelet. Only after you have removed the main unit from the bracelet, you can charge the main unit.

To charge you get an usb cable. The initial charge in the MI Band that I got was around 66% but before using it, I charged the main unit till 100%.

While the tracker was charging, I installed the MI Band app. For this, go to the play store and download the MI Band application. The application seems to be in chinese language in the store, but don't worry it takes your phones local language settings and for me got installed in English.

Post installation, it will ask you for permissions. Agree to those.

After agreeing to the alert, you can see this screen.

We need to login using our MI username and password. After sign in to the MI account, we need to enable bluetooth as the phone needs to pair with the band. Allow the app to turn on the bluetooth.

If the band is found by the app, the band's lights will start flashing. To pair the band with the phone, tap on the tracker for few times when the lights are flashing.

First input to the app once its paired will be gender, then age, then height, then weight and then your daily goal.

Select your height in cms.

Then weight

select your daily step goals.

Click next and your app is now configured. The default app is not that versatile and hence I used the twekaed MI Band application with the notification services. You can also use the same app from the following link.

The tweaked verison allows you to set up notifications for your installed application. This is a lot better feature and makes the MI band more useful and user friendly. I will talk about this later in the review.

Review of the MI Band.

Lets talk about the functions of the Mi band and review them one by one.

1) Track steps taken, distance travelled and Calories burned.

The main function of the MI band is to track the steps taken. MI band provides information of the steps taken, calories burned and the total distance travelled. This is very useful information. Mi band though does fail miserably on the actual steps taken. MI Band is worn in the hand and due to which it does capture ghost steps. What I meant by the ghost steps is that even though you are sitting on the chair, but with the movement of your hand, it could track that as a step taken. Frankly this was annoying for me. For e.g I use the google fit also to monitor the steps taken and the difference between the two is more than 25%, where google fit provides me with a lower step count. Hence for this particular reason, i say that there is an issue with the accuracy of data captured by MI Band.

Due to the above reasons, distance travelled and calories burned data would also not accurate.

2) Sleep tracker

The MI band tracks your sleeping pattern. It monitors how long you have slept and how long were you in a state of deep sleep. This is helpful as it lets you know the total hrs that you have slept and out of those hrs how many hrs you were in the state of deep sleep. Mi Band tracks your deep sleep based on the movement on the bed. If during your sleep, there is no movement, then that's considered as deep sleep. I liked this feature and is very accurate as far as the sleeping hours and state of sleep is concerned. But this will work only once in a day.

By what I mean once in a day is, Once you get up and sync your Mi band with the app on the mobile, for any other session of sleep will not be caputred. I work night shifts and hence sleep during the day. I don't get to sleep 8 hrs at a stretch and hence break my sleep pattern in two different slots with in the day. The second sleeping hours or state of sleep is not captured. This is something that I did not like and we should be able to track any hours of sleep.

3) Alarms

The MI band provides you with an alarm reminder. Set up an alarm and when its time to wake up, the alarm will ensure that you are awake as it will vibrate on your wrist and this would certainly help you to awake. This functionality is only with the inbuilt alarm app and will not work with any thrid party applications.

But I must say I will give this to the band as its surely will ensure that you are awaken by the alarm.

4) Incoming call notification

Mi Band provides you with the incoming call notification. This is particularly useful if you are in a crowded place and can't hear the phone ring, or you have by activated the silent mode onto your phone. The MI band will vibrate when there is an incoming call. You can set the time interval in seconds for the Mi band to vibrate after the call has hit your phone. I selected 3 seconds, hence any call that hits me, I get the call notification on my band (Vibrate). This is really cool and helpful feature when i am driving or in crowded place or in meetings. This helps me get discrete notifications.

5) Battery Life

One of the most impressive aspect of the Mi Band. The MI band has huge battery life. Company claims that the MI band will last upto 30 days before it needs to be charged again. Comparing this to the competition, 2 days for the fitbit flex and 10 days for the jawbone, MI Band is untouchable as far as the battery life is concerned.

6) Special funtion for Mi phones.

If you own the flagship phones of Xiaomi then you can use the special functions of MI band. One of the function is screen unlock. When a locked MI phone is near the Mi Band (app installed and unlock permission provided from the settings) the phone will be unlocked automatically. This is really cool feature and I love it.

7) New functions from the tweaked app

Tweaked app has increased the usage of the Mi Band. Now we can get notifications from our favourite apps (vibration on your mi band for the selected apps.) I setup apps like whatsapp and QQ on the notifications and its really effective. Though I had to stop these very soon as otherwise the MI band would have been vibrating whole day on my hand. :)

I have enabled the notifications now for my gmail app, my runkeeper app and my messaging app.

8) Fitness centre

Under the menu, you have additional functionality for fitness centre. I am not sure if its the functionality of the MI Band app or the tweaked version as I did not keep the MI band app for long. The fitness centre provide you with the way to calculate your jumping rope or situps. This is a nice to have functionality as now you don't have to count your jumps while using the jumping rope as the app would count it for you. This is cool.

Final score for the Mi Band is 54 out of 80.
I forgot to mention one important aspect of the MI Band. Its certified with waterproof and this helps. One additional issue that I noticed with the Mi Band is that the indicator LED do not work as expected.

On the MI Band you have three LED, which help in providing you with the quick snapshot of your goal achievement. On every 33% of the goal achieved, 1 LED light would light up and when the goal is met, all three LEDs should lit up. This is not working for me. Also the quick glance function where you look at the MI band like a wrist watch, it does not show us the progress. This is annoying.

Final Verdict

i would certainly recommend MI band to all as its the best VFM smart wearables in the market today. For a fraction of the cost of other fitness tracker, this is a great tool. Steps tracked info is not somthing that I can rely on completely and needs to be taken with a pinch of salt. This is where we need some improvements.

MI Band is a novelty and for the price that it's available its VFM. This is the first attempt by Xiaomi in the smart wearables and is really nice for the first time. Though there are still lot of rough edges and those need to be sorted soon, specially if the main functionality of fitness tracking is not working as expected that's a major let down. With the new tweaked app with notification we do know now that the possibilities for enhancement is really there and Xiaomi should capitalize this asap. Also this VFM band should be launched soon in India so that Xiaomi has the first laucher benefit and many people would buy it for its low cost.

One major reason to be proud of the Mi Band is the quality of material used. Even though the cost of the band is low, The band is great to look at and also the bracelet which is made of high quality silicone material is also really nice to feel. You will not get irritated while wearing for long hrs at a stretch.
