After the huge success of both the Mi 3 and Mi 4, Xiaomi is finally all set to launch the Mi 5 this Thursday, 16th July, 2015.

The event might also feature the launch of a bigger variant, the Mi 5 Plus.

The launch of the device was first announced through the Chinese website Weibo. The teaser image depicted a slim side view of the possible Mi 5, with the letters PK written on the sides.

The slim design also shows slightly rounded edges but the invitation in itself if so abstract that it is hard to find say how the phone will be right now.

Xiaomi had launched the Mi 4 back in July 2014, so this seems to be the right time for us to expect the Mi 5.

The device is expected to be priced at approximately 24,500 INR.

The leaks about the specs of the Mi 5 have not ceased to crop up every now and then. The screen could be about 5.2-inch QHD (1440×2560 pixels) LCD display with 2.5D edges.

A Corning Gorilla Glass 4 is said to be on the screen to protect it from getting scratched or broken.

Under the hood, it is to be powered by a Snapdragon 810 chipset and speculations have also hinted earlier at the usage of a 4GB RAM, but no confirmation on it has been delivered yet. Internal storage would vary between 16 and 64 GB.

Various reports have pegged the battery capacity between 3000mAh and 3,030mAh, which is surprisingly lower than that of its predecessor that was fitted with a 3080mAh battery.

Although the rear camera has been confirmed to be about 16 MP by many sources, the reports tend to vary for the front camera.

Some claim that the camera would be only 6MP while others have said that it would be every selfie lover’s dream, with a lens of 13MP.

Some reports have even said that the Mi 5, codenamed Libra, would be fitted with a fingerprint scanner as well.

On the other hand, the Mi 5 Plus may come with a 5.7-inch QHD (1440×2560 pixels) screen. The rear snapper is expected to be 23 megapixel and would come with OIS and laser autofocus.

Selfie lovers would enjoy clicking away at themselves with the 12-megapixel front facing lens. Internal storage is rumored to be 32 GB.

Both the phones would run on Android Lollipop, with a MIUI 7 user interface. Added on to this would be the Android Open Kang Project, which would make the MIUI 7 even better than before.

Xiaomi plans to announce something on June 10 : may be Smart Water Purifier

Xiaomi has been steadily working on its connected home strategy with a number of products including an air purifier, a smart scale, smart TVs and much more. Towards the end of last year, first reports surfaced online claiming that Xiaomi was working on a smart water purifier. The Chinese company could now be planning on launching it next week.

Xiaomi has posted a teaser on Weibo that shows an unannounced product. While it doesn’t specifically mention what is in store, the water ripples at the bottom could be a subtle hint at the forthcoming Water Purifier.

Xiaomi has been announcing all sorts of devices this year. This Chinese smartphone manufacturer has released a range of smartphones, along with some other smart gadgets, like a smart scale for example. Xiaomi is China’s number one smartphone OEM and they’re constantly trying to expand their lineup of devices, and are also looking to expand to other markets. That being said, it looks like Xiaomi plans to announce something on June 10, what will it be? Read on.

Well, judging by the company’s latest teaser and Lei Jun’s recent comments, it seems like Water Purifier is on the way. If you take a look at the provided image, you’ll notice the water on the bottom of it, and Lei Jun did talk about eco-friendly companies lately. It is, of course, possible that Xiaomi plans to release something else in a week, we’ll just have to wait and see. We doubt this will be a press conference or anything of the sort though, chances are Xiaomi will just release the information on their official webpage and via social media on said date.

The company is, however, expected to release a number of smartphones by the end of the year, not to mention that their 2nd-gen Mi Pad tablet is also long overdue. Xiaomi is one of those companies which makes unexpected moves in the mobile space, so who knows what else can we expect by the end of the year. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 and Mi 5 will also launch in the coming months, and Redmi Note 2’s release might be closer than we think. That handset has been leaking all over the place in the last couple of months, and by the looks of it, it might even sport a metallic frame and / or body.

There you have it folks, the announcement will happen on June 10th, and we’ll of course report back as soon as it happens. You can definitely expect the announcement of the Water Purifier, and it remains to be seen if Xiaomi intends to surprise us with an additional announcement or not.

Earlier this year, as a part of its fifth anniversary, Xiaomi sold more than 1.34 million connected devices alongside 2.12 million phones. During the 12 hour sale, the company managed to sell 770,000 smart appliances, 208,000 Mi Bands, 79,000 Mi Wi-Fi, 38,600 Mi TVs, and 31,000 Mi Air Purifiers, and 247,000 and 45,000 units of the Mi Power Strips, Mi Smart Scales respectively.

Xiaomi has been quite open about its ambition for an ecosystem of connected devices. It has invested over $200 million in Midea, a Chinese home appliance maker with a portfolio including air conditioners, refrigerators and kitchen appliances. The latter also shares Xiaomi’s vision of a smart home and is said to be investing over $2 billion in IoT in the next three years.

Where will Xiaomi be without Hugo Barra?

Consider these two events:

Event 1: Last month, Xiaomi's Hugo Barra launched the Mi4i and the Mi Band in New Delhi. The launch was held at the Siri Fort Auditorium. As Hugo Barra said at the event, Xiaomi had been hunting for a large venue. The Mi4i launch was important for Xiaomi - it was having a global launch of a mobile for the first time in India. No other mobile company had done it before.

The Siri Fort Auditorium is one of the biggest auditoria in India. And the hype created before the launch ensured that the auditorium was packed.

The same day, just before Xiaomi's event, there was another mobile phone launch in Delhi that had film stars strutting on the stage. Xiaomi's had none -- except Hugo Barra. And, Barra was a showstopper!

Hugo Barra was greeted with thunderous applause as he took the stage. Not all Vice-Presidents of companies get this response. For the next two hours, Barra held the audience - that included a huge army of Xiaomi 'fans' - spellbound.

When it was time for the price announcement, Hugo Barra taunted the audience, and gave a full minute for the response. After dousing expectations by saying Xiaomi could not afford to cut prices especially with top class components and resolution, he brought the house down by announcing the price - Rs. 12,999 - that beat even the wildest expectations.

Next, when he announced the price of the Mi Band, he said there would be no theatrics - and just flashed the price - Rs. 999. This in itself was dramatic -- this time giving no time for guesses, or even the time to think of a price.

By the time the event came to an end, one of the techies said, "It looks as if we have just watched a Rajnikant movie!"

Event 2: This was a few months ago when Hugo Barra introduced the Mi4, the predecessor of Mi4i, in Chennai. The event was held at a small conference room. As I made my way to the front along with another techie, there was this foreigner who had kept his bag in one of the front row seats. As he saw us looking for seats, he simply removed his bag and kept it on the floor. I did not realise this was Hugo Barra till his name was announced.

After the event, when some techies clamoured for selfies, he readily agreed and even offered to come out of the room so that the background was better. And as we crowded around him for a casual conversation, he never gave the impression that he was the Vice-President of a mobile company that was rising to the top - fast. Fast enough to scare other biggies.

A blogger from Bangalore said this: Hugo Barra's affability was one of the reasons for Xiaomi's success in India. He had ensured that Xiaomi spoke the techie language and also ensured that the tech blogger community got its due recognition. There was also things like Xiaomi offering warranty even for rooted Mi4s. Hugo Barra made a specific mention of this at the Chennai event. Xiaomi is the first mobile company to recognise rooting - a favourite pastime of mobile techies.

What Hugo Barra has done to Xiaomi is to bring it to the global stage single handedly. Of course, the flash sale model too has helped boost the sales of Xiaomi products. A flash sale is like trying for a train ticket under Tatkal in IRCTC. You eagerly sit before the computer at the appointed time and desperately try for the ticket. Here, it is a mobile or a device like the Mi Band.
