When Xiaomi announced the launch of much awaited flagship smartphone Mi4 in India, people expected to see a powerful smartphone beast complimented with a great work of craftsmanship. But after a month of Mi4 launch, looks like the device has failed to meet the expectations – at least in India. According to an online poll, 65% of participants feel that OnePlus One (OPO) has an edge over Xiaomi Mi4. More than 1,000 people participated in the poll and OnePlus One wins over Mi4 with a big margin, with 698 votes in its favor.

Though we didn’t ask the participants what really disappointed them, but after spending some time on the internet and reading few of the top reviews’ comments and feedback, it was crystal clear that Xiaomi Mi4 failed to reach the bar it had set by itself. And, to make the situation worse for Xiaomi, OnePlus One changed its sales strategy in India. The Company adopted invite-free sales model right at the time when Xiaomi was busy in setting up its stage on Flipkart.

But the commencement of OnePlus One sales on the same day was not the sole reason people shied away from Xiaomi Mi4. While people were expecting the identical Mi4 specs that were launched in its homegrown market China, the company decided to introduce a rather scaled down model of the device. The missing 4G capability, launch of 16 GB storage variant apparently hurt the people the most.

So, what really went against Xiaomi Mi4?

Mostly, it was the pre-launch expectations and reduced price policy of OnePlus One. Xiaomi took more than six months to bring Mi4 to India and all these months the company kept convincing users that engineers are busy in optimizing the device for the best performance in Indian scenario. However, after over six-month long wait, the company apparently found it difficult to meet the benchmark with its 4G capability in India. It’s important to mention here that, currently, in India 4G network works on 2,300mAh band, while in most of the other countries, including China, 1800 band is ideal for 4G network. Therefore, a company has to go through a design change process to make its device 4G compatible. Besides, the closest competitor of Mi4, OnePlus One introduced the 4G capable 16 GB variant at a very competitive price. People found more value-for-money in a device that is cheaper by Rs. 1,000, supports 4G network and sports a bit bigger screen.

As Xiaomi was racing against the time while its design engineers wanted to buy more time to make it work on 4G network without compromising on performance, the Apple of China – as Xiaomi is known – decided to introduce 3G only variant in India. The company reportedly decided to shift focus on Mi Note to make a 4G enabled device for India. According to few rumors, the XiaomiMi Note would be launched in India in July this year.

Overall, Engadget has rated Xiaomi Mi4 with 82 points, as compared to OnePlus One with 90 points. The impeccable construction makes Xiaomi Mi4 the best hardware seen in all year, but people are expecting more value-for-money from smartphones these days. As Xiaomi has just launched the 64 Gb variant of Mi4, hope it could win over OnePlus One now.

Data security firm Bluebox has discovered preinstalled malware and a host of other issues with a Xiaomi Mi 4 device the company tested. Scarier still, the phone seems to have been tampered with by an unidentified third party.

Bluebox first issued a report on Thursday, after reaching out to Xiaomi and not getting a response.

When the researchers first received the phone, they made sure it was legitimately a Xiaomi device using Xiaomi’s “Mi Identification” app. Upon further testing, security researchers found that there were several malicious applications preloaded onto the smartphone, including adware that disguises itself as a verified Google application; trojans, which allow hackers to gain control of the phone; and other high-risk software.

Furthermore, the device was “vulnerable to every vulnerability we scanned for,” wrote Andrew Blaich, Bluebox’s lead security analyst, in a blog post.

Blaich also said that Mi 4’s operating system is a non-certified version of Android and is therefore subject to a number of flaws. Some of the bugs and security holes his researchers discovered were specific to old Android software, not its current release, leading them to believe that the OS was a mashup between the new KitKat 4.4.4. and an older form of Android. Other issues within the API build made the researchers unsure whether the device was meant for testing or consumer use.

There was also suspicion that the device may have been tampered with, because some of the apps held signatures that differed from the manufacturer’s signing key.

On Friday, the firm finally heard back from Xiaomi.

“We are certain the device that Bluebox tested is not using a standard MIUI ROM, as our factory ROM and OTA ROM builds are never rooted and we don’t pre-install services such as YT Service, PhoneGuardService, AppStats etc. Bluebox could have purchased a phone that has been tampered with, as they bought it via a physical retailer in China. Xiaomi does not sell phones via third-party retailers in China, only via our official online channels and selected carrier stores.” — Hugo Barra, VP International

Barra went on to say that the company was investigating why it took Xiaomi so long to respond to Bluebox’s initial message. He also said that customers should only purchase Xiaomi products from Mi.com and the select verified stores that the company works with. However, Blaich seemed unimpressed by the response.

“If it’s this easy to modify the device in the retail chain, it could also be modified in transit, even when purchased from mi.com,” he wrote, and then referenced a recent article from Der Spiegel that demonstrated how U.S. intelligence officials are able to intercept computers before they reach their destination and load them with malware — a more modern form of wiretapping. The thought being, if Xiaomi smartphones are already getting hacked at the retail level, they may be vulnerable to more complex attacks.

Within the report, Blaich notes that the more popular a device is, the more frequently it’s attacked. Xiaomi already has 100 million people on its MIUI platform and has plans to launch in the U.S. this year, which means the number of Xiaomi users is only going up.

MI 4 :Flashing Guide

MIUI provides you different types of ROMs just incase of any software emergency. In this tutorial, I will guide you how to flash these ROMs. Mi 4 has 2 kinds of ROMs, Recovery ROM (Stable ROM and Developer ROM) & Fastboot ROM (Stable ROM it is)

Before flashing any ROM follow these 2 points :

1- Make sure your battery percentage is above 50% at least
2- Take a Back up. : Settings-->Additional Settings--> Backup & reset -->Local Bakcup-->Backup

Backup file will be created in : Internal Storage-->MIUI -> Backup-->All Back up
Copy this back up file on your PC or on OTG support
After flashing Copy the back up file from PC or OTG support respectively to: Internal Storage-->MIUI -> Backup-->All Back up
Then go to Settings-->Additional Settings--> Backup & reset -->Local Bakcup--> You will find the backup file -->Tap on it to restore

How To Flash Stable and Developer ROM.
Stable ROM.

You can download Stable ROM pack from Xiaomi Mi 4 Stable Rom Download tab. or Latest MIUI V6 6.3.9 India Specific Stable ROM.
Place that ROM Zip file into " Root" folder of Internal storage.( Just paste into Internal storage, don't paste it in any folder. For more Info check the Screenshot below)
Go to Updater App(you will find it in Homescreen-->tools folder-->Update,Blue color logo with Up arow ) -->Tap on the 3 dots in a circle (You will find it at above right corner of the screen)--> Select update package-->Navigate to ROM zip file and Tap on that file.

Developer ROM.

You can download Developer ROM from Xiaomi Mi 4 Developer Rom Download tab.
Place that ROM Zip file into " Root" folder of Internal storage.( Just paste into Internal storage, dnt paste it in any folder. For more Info check the Screenshot below)
Enter into Recovery Mode: Switch Off your device-->Press Volume up + Power Button simulataneously -->Select "English" (Use Volume up & Down button to Navigate and Power Button to enter) --> Wipe & Reset -->Wipe All Data
Wipe all Data is must before flashing Developer ROM to remove Google Apps and framework, If you fail to do that then all the Google Apps will give you Force close.
Check the above screenshots. Process is same as Stable ROM .
If you want to install Google apps : Go to Mi Market-->search for "Google" and install the apps. Apps will also ask you to install Google framework, allow it.

How to Flash Fastboot ROM.

Download the Fastboot ROM ( I will update this thread once I get link of India specific ROM)
Download and Install Mi Flash Tool on your PC

Download fastboot drivers and install them in your PC
minimal_adb_fastboot_v1.1.3_setup.zip
After installing drivers restart your PC.
Take a Back up ( Check the above steps which I mentioned at the start)
Make sure your battery is above 50% atleast
Switch off your device and enter into Fastboot Mode by pressing Volume down+Power button simultaneously.
Connect Your device to PC by USB cord.

Follow the steps

Open the Mi Flash Tools when it is connected with your device with USB Cord.
Click on the arrow near the "Browse" button in Mi Flash Tools--> Select the "Browse" option and navigate to the FastBoot ROM folder which you want to Flash and Press "OK".

After Giving the correct path/ Browsing the Fastboot ROm folder.
Click in the Arrow of "Browse" button and select "Advanced" this time.
In "Advanced" option--> Navigate to the .bat file which you want to flash. Check the below Screenshot to see how each.bat file works.

After selecting .bat file. Click on refresh.
Your device will appear in Mi Flash Tool window if it is connected.

After you see your device appears in Mi Flash Tool. Press Flash Button to start flashing the ROM on your device

After clicking the "Flash" option. It will take around 2-3 minutes to flash your device.
When the operation is completed. You will see Progress Bar in green color.

After the complete operation your device will be booted automatically.

Question 1: What is the unique selling point of the Mi 4?

The Mi 4 is still the world's fastest mobile phone. The stainless steel metal frame uses a very complex manufacturing process, providing excellent grip on the side. Question 10: What is the Mi 4 back cover made of? Can it be changed?

The Mi 4 back cover uses a raster pattern and employs a 9 layer in-mold transfer technology which is only 0.06mm thick. It has an effective anti-UV coating layer and is also anti fingerprint. The cover can be changed and Xiaomi will introduce more cover options in time to come.

Question 11: Is the Mi 4's battery removable?
